Mending A Broken Heart

One year ago today I was in the middle of my fourth miscarriage. Scott and I were feeling pretty hopeless last New Year's Eve. Fifty-seven days into the new year, we got some really good news - I was pregnant again. However, November 7 was a long way off.

When I was 5 weeks pregnant I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. While in the hospital being treated for that, I started bleeding. I was pretty sure I was losing another baby. After three days I was discharged and went home to wait. For an end to my seventh pregnancy. At 7 weeks, while still bleeding, I saw my obstetrician. On the ultrasound we saw a tiny little heartbeat. I tried not to get my hopes up - we had seen baby hearts that stopped beating before.

The bleeding continued, but so did the pregnancy.

At 22 weeks, our baby was given a scary diagnosis of a serious congenital heart defect. Because of this, during my pregnancy I had lots of ultrasounds, so we saw that amazing heart beating many times.

That little heart, with all its imperfections, belongs to the baby girl who makes her mama's heart whole.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

A Very Mary Christmas

Mary is doing wonderfully. We saw Dr. V (the cardiologist) last Thursday - he was really pleased with her. He said she looked like a real baby. Ha! She had an echo done and everything looked good. At 7 weeks, she's tipping the scale at 10 1/2 pounds. She is smiling and cooing more each day. She's my favorite gift this year.

Big Brothers, Little Sister

Charlie and Sam really wanted a little sister. Mary is pretty pleased with her brothers as well... The night before Mary was born, we all guessed the baby's gender one last time. Sam said, with resignation and disappointment in his voice, "I hope it's a girl, but it's probably a boy."
She makes us all so happy. Check out her dimples.
